Ahead of Its Time
This film begins with two German scientists named "Professor Achenbach" (Friedrich Kayssler) and "Professor Werner Holk" (Hans Albers), preparing to conduct an experiment transforming lead into gold. What they don't realize, however, is that their sole employee, a technician named "Becker" (Hansjoachim Buttner), has been bribed to sabotage the experiment to keep it from succeeding. Sure enough, although he had been assured that nobody would be hurt, his sabotage ends up killing Professor Achenbach and causing a serious injury to Professor Holk. Not long after his full recovery, Professor Holk receives a couple of visitors who extend an invitation to talk to a billionaire named "John Wills" (Michael Bohnen) on his private yacht in reference to his own experiments on turning lead into gold. Immediately suspecting that Mr. Wills had something to do with his friend's death, Professor Holk accepts the invitation. However, it soon becomes clear that Professor Holk is less concerned about gaining scientific notoriety than about avenging Professor Achenbach. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this was an entertaining science-fiction film that was way ahead of its time, primarily due to the impressive special effects. Likewise, the intense plot and solid acting of Hans Albers also benefited this film. Admittedly, this film is somewhat dated, but I still enjoyed it for the most part, and I have rated it accordingly.
