This is a movie that's talked about so much that you practically know it, even if you haven't seen it; it's a pop culture phenomenon. Well, I never saw this movie when it came out in the theaters, don't really know why, just hadn't made the time to see it. I finally saw it (1/25/17) and... man, was it boring. Yes, boring.
The pacing is slow, the acting is mediocre (the mother and father) and some of the jokes don't land. I love the actors in this movie, but it just seems to drag along. The special effects are dated, but rather enjoyable, so I didn't mind that at all. My biggest gripe about this movie was with Beetlejuice himself. For a movie that carries his name in the title and is acted with great gusto by Michael Keaton, you'd think Beetlejuice would be in the movie a lot more. The movie is 1 1/2 hours long and Beetlejuice is on screen for about 15 minutes! His character is not fleshed out all that well, as oftentimes we are left to wonder about his motivation. Is he a good guy, a bad guy, who's he trying to help or hurt? Beetlejuice just acts quirky and rambles on, probably in the hopes that we as the audience won't notice that he's not really doing anything. But again, it's the story itself that fails; it has bad pacing, not enough of the main title character, and ultimately it becomes a boring mess
This is a movie that had great actors, a decent outline for a story and terrific potential, unfortunately it doesn't deliver on any of them. I think I would have liked this movie if I had seen it when it came out and I would remember it fondly and with a nostalgic sense of wonder. But no, I just recently saw it and nope, can't recommend it. As an 80's kid, I hate saying this, but this movie is just badly executed. Sad, it could have really been something, if they had only made Beetlejuice the main character in the movie and fleshed out the story.

I had this movie on my watchlist for a long time and decided to finally watch it. Oh wow it was not what I was expecting. What even is this movie? The beginning was actually pretty good, but the middle and ending not so much. The character Beetlejuice is unbearable to watch. I didn't like his persona and inappropriateness. I'm glad I didn't watch this movie in childhood because I would've paid less attention to the script and not realized how inappropriate some parts of the movie are. This is without a doubt the worst Tim Burton film of all time. The high ratings and praise for this movie surprised me. Maybe people rate this movie higher due to nostalgia or something.

I haven't watched this film in a very long time. It has its semi-funny and entertaining moments with macabre, dark humor tones and the screenplay is innovative and original, but overall my feelings about this film are indifferent. I enjoyed Winona Ryder's performance as Lydia. Michael Keaton's wacky Betelgeuse is like an undead version of an alternate universe Joker.

This film has great performances. It is, well, creative. 5 year olds are also creative. And this film feels like it was dictated by a 5 year old kid while tripping on acid. I watched it in the 80s and did not like it. And then I gave it a full watch in 2024, and it was worse than ever. I enjoy art films, dramas, and a nice dose of Jackass is always fun. But I just am amazed how such a terrible movie could have such a large following. I will grant that the soundtrack is an excellent fun and fluttery score by Danny Elfman. There are some fun visuals. There is definitely some original filming techniques that are worthy of studying in film school. But ultimately, a horribly bad story sinks this ship for me.
With Beetlejuice 2 coming out soon, I thought I should watch the 1988 one as I'd never been inclined to see it. The lack of upcoming movies means Beetlejuice 2 has to be close to the top of the list for September 2024. Wow. Short movie. And my main complaint is Beetlejuice was entirely nonessential to the movie. Take him out, and everything still works and it all ends up the same. Michael Keaton's character is like a very rude, sexually inappropriate Jim Carey with a beer belly. Again, no point to his being there. Geena Davis and Winona Ryder were fantastic. The shortness of the movie was apparent in the broken storyline. Unnecessary conversations were too long and conversations to explain what was going on and why they were ok with the whole movie premise would've been helpful. In conclusion, I don't see what the big deal was about it in the 80s. Maybe Beetlejuice 2 will be better. We'll see.

Hello Imdb review readers. This review you are reading was written on Decem 18 2022. The same date, Argentina "won" the 22 world cup.
About: I was vastly confused and had no idea what was going on for a while. What I got is a couple somehow dies. I'm not sure how or when, and they try to spook a family out of their house. Why the other stuff happen, I do not know.
Story and Production: As for story, it was confusing. It wasn't clear. The production was really neat in terms of make up, costumes and environment. The acting was good too. The effects that they used in this film beats modern day CGI 24/7.
Highlight: Remembering the guy from Seinfeld, Mikey Bloomberg singing voice actor and the guy from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Genre: Horror
Soundtrack: It gels very well.
Duration: A good 1 and a half. The film went by quickly, though the movie was lackluster.
Do any worthless mutts appear?: Yes. A dumb dog caused the couple to have an accident and to expire, apparently. They should have made the mutt roadkill.
Is this movie Worthy?: Nah. Too confusing.
Should you watch this?: Nah... unless you're a "person" that is obsessed with the dead, then maybe this movie can make you feel high.
Please don't watch this.
