Required viewing. A modern masterpiece. The scene between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper is absolutely classic(the last last line is what I quoted in my summary). A 'learn how to be cool' movie. It's funny, thrilling, sarcastic. He's got an imaginary friend...and it's ELVIS! The juice of Tarantino. The birth of Scaggnetti (and Tony Soprano.)
Quotes are all over this flick. 'Do I look like a beautiful blonde with big tits, and a ^$#%#@ that tastes like ice cream?.....then why are you lying to me?" Choose a f$$$ing lane! Don't give me the finger,I 'll have you f###ing killed!"
"I always liked you Clarence...." "The first time you kill somebody, that's hardest one....the second one ain't no f##### mardi gras, but it's still hard. The third one....you level off. ...Now I do do it just to watch there expression change.", James Gandolfini (Pre-Sopranos) showing raw talent as a cold-hearted killer. Brad Pitt hitting the bong and talking to shotgun wielding mafiosos with Soundgarden in the background..."You wanna hit?"....chick-chick(shotguns) "Ok, Well, you go down Santa Clara for a while, then turn left, and keep driving for a while...."
It's true romance... He kills her pimp, and she takes a Royal beating for him. BUT the movies's not over. You have to have pulled some crazy s*** in your life to totally appreciate this movie, but it is awesome.
"When you get out in two years you'll be so in touch with wife needs cuz you'll know what's like to get f##### up the a##!"...Scagnetti
"If it's anything this last week has taught me, is that it's better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it."
"Tell me I'm the dumbest motherf##### you've ever seen, or I'm gonna pump two into your face right now!" ...Clarence
Non-stop action. Ups and downs. Irony, and a realistic ending. Cameos...up and coming actors... it's all here. And most of all, "True Romance", which I believe is a totally accurate title. Absolutely brilliant. A movie you can watch many times.
You have to see this outstanding piece of work.

I first saw this in the late 90s on a vhs.
Revisited the remastered director's cut recently.
This movie has everything, romance, drama, action, shot gun blasting, terrific star cast n superb acting by Oldman, Slater n Arquette.
Of course it has homage to Presley, Chibba n McQueen's Bullit.
Oldman gave one of cinema's most brutal, scar faced villain. His dreadlock wig n contact lens from Dracula made him a very memorable villain inspite of having few mins role.
The meeting n exchange of words between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper is crazy n tension filled.
The only scene i didn't like was when Patricia Arquette gets beaten but the way she fights back is 100 times better than most horror movie final girl act.
She was gorgeous in this movie.

'True Romance' is a deliciously pulpy romp that saw director Tony Scott bring a burnished visual sheen to an early Quentin Tarantino script. While the title suggests images of hugs, kisses, holding hands, and heartfelt human emotion, the film instead bombards the audience with images of blazing guns, brutal beatings, and lots of gushing blood while telling a twisted and entertaining tale of outlaw lovers on the run.
Clarence (Christain Slater in his best role ever) is a comic-book store employee, living a meager but not intolerable life in Detroit. On his birthday night, he meets a pretty blonde hooker named Alabama (Patricia Arquette, reliably efficient and displaying a great chemistry with Slater) and they are soon positively smitten, declaring their love for each other, only to be married a few days later. Clarence goes to see her pimp, Drexl (a truly whacked-out Gary Oldman who devours his ten minutes on screen), with the meeting ending with Clarence killing him and making off with a suitcase. The case, which Clarence thought contained Alabama's clothes, actually contains two-million dollars' worth of cocaine, and this puts this newly-married duo find themselves in quite the thorny predicament. Once the dust - and blood - clears, they decide to trek off to Hollywood to see Clarence's pal who might know some industry folks interested in high-quality coke. Little do they know that Drexl's partners (led by Christopher Walken's quietly malicious Vincenzo) are tracking them and intend to get their merchandise back, eliminating the couple for good measure.
True Romance is a paper-thin but enjoyably quirky romance carried by great dialogue, an unpredictable plot, and a cast of wildly original characters. The storyline is far from earth-shattering, but it guarantees some good escapist fun, especially since the script boasts a few scenes possessive of great wit and sparkle, along with a show-stopping one chock-full of dynamic psychological tension – between Dennis Hopper (who brings a phenomenal degree of warmth as Clarence's father) and Christopher Walken, whose "vendetta kinda mood" head-to-head became one of the most memorable sparrings of cinema. Many people may be turned off by the graphic and sometimes savage violence of True Romance. But that is only part of the dirty, funny and unpredictably violent genius of Mr. Tarantino. Tarantino and Tony Scott never pretend that the film is more than what it is - slickly entertaining trash.
Eventually, it is Tarantino's gutter poetry that detonates True Romance. This movie is dynamite - a hip, clever and irreverent high-voltage thriller with nary a dull moment!

Cult star Max Julien (of "The Mack") died recently, making the mention of him in Tony Scott's "True Romance" all the more significant. Written by Quentin Tarantino, this movie has just about every shocking thing that you can imagine, and they do it all perfectly. Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette play newlyweds who flee Detroit to escape some mobsters, but I can't do the movie justice by describing the plot. Slater and Arquette, along with Gary Oldman, Val Kilmer, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Samuel L. Jackson, James Gandolfini, Brad Pitt, Bronson Pinchot, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn, Michael Rapaport, Conchata Ferrell and Saul Rubinek put on some of the best performances that you'll ever see. Definitely check this movie out.
Oh, and in case you're wondering: yes, Samuel L. Jackson uses his important word.

Although True Romance is directed by Tony Scott, the screenplay has Tarantino written all over it, which is a good thing, cause the funny, street smart dialogue is the best thing about the movie, you could say it's what fuels it.
The movie is filled with cameos and great actors, including Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Brad Pitt and more. But I really have to praise Gary Oldman as the crazy pimp in this movie. Although he doesn't get much screen time, by far one of the best performances of all time. Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken also stand out in this movie, especially in a scene they share together. Oh and James Gandolfini is also in this one.
Like I said, the dialogue is amazing but I don't think the movie always goes down as smoothly as Tony Scott would have liked it to. It just feels to me that the pacing is kinda off sometimes and the score doesn't help. This is a weird thing for me to say cause Hans Zimmer composed the music for the movie, and I'm a huge fan of his, but I really didn't like the score to this movie, I thought it was annoying.
Nevertheless, True Romance is thoroughly entertaining and it's a movie that takes chances. It's not generic, it's not typical and I love that. One can't help but wonder what would have happened if Tarantino had gotten his hands on the camera.

Super satisfied to be directed to this movie and very upset I never took the time to view their earlier in my life. 'True Romance' is a treat from start to finish. Piling on an endless barrage of action, comedy, romance, mystery, suspense, and add any other element, this flick probably has it without ever feeling too much. The script very obviously projects Tarantino's influence, making this a treat to the Tarantino fans. The acting from everyone that appears on screen is excellent. If you have never seen this film before, you will see titans within the movie industry appear with such minor roles yet are so satisfying to see. The film as a whole is a fast-paced roller coaster ride, consistently entertaining the viewers with each moment that passes. The material within this film alone could fuel hundreds of other films. A truly fulfilling entertainment piece.
A definite recommendation here from Oberrated and two thumbs up.

This movie is criminally underseen. It's one of the flicks Tarantino has ever written and Tony Scott has ever filmed. Filled with romance, inspired characters, solid charasmatic performances and ultra violence this is without a doubt one of my favorite films. The film tells the tale of Alabama played by an amazing Patricia Arquette and Clarence a "so cool" Christian Slater in possibly his best performance. Shes a call girl his friends hire for him. They immediately fall in love and he tries to free her from her violent pimp played by a surprising Gary Oldman. It of course goes wrong and he ends up grabbing the wrong suitcase, one filled with cocaine. They of course go on down to Hollywood to try and sell it and before they know it they have the cops, the mafia and a bunch of criminals after them. The movie is well written the screenplay is smart and overly romantic with some great comedy and action. And it's all just so well executed by Tony Scott. It's really one of the best films ever. Although it floundered at the box office it has since found a most deserved cult following. Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Michael Rappaport, Chris Penn, Val Kilmer, Samuel L. Jackson, Saul Rubinek, Conchata Ferrell and Tom Sizemore also star.
Budget: $12.5M Box Office: $12.3M

Quentin Tarantino's True Romance is a cinematic gem, a film that sparkles with wit, style, and a heart-wrenching emotional core. Tarantino's script is a marvel, a tapestry woven with dialogue that crackles with energy and characters who feel so real, they leap off the screen. The casting is impeccable, with every actor delivering a performance that is both memorable and nuanced.
The film's story, a whirlwind romance that takes a dark and violent turn, is a testament to Tarantino's ability to blend genres and subvert expectations. At its heart, True Romance is a love story, a tale of two people who find solace and purpose in each other. But it is also a crime thriller, a gangster film, and a road movie, all seamlessly interwoven into a narrative that is both thrilling and deeply moving.
The film is filled with iconic moments, but none more memorable than the scene between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper. This extended sequence, a masterclass in acting and filmmaking, is one of the greatest in cinematic history. Walken's performance is a tour de force, a masterclass in understated intensity. Hopper, as always, is a force of nature, delivering a line reading that is both chilling and hilarious.
In a time when so many films seem content to churn out formulaic plots and forgettable characters, True Romance is a film that reminds us of the power of storytelling and the importance of strong acting. It is a masterpiece that will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.

To me, a 'cult classic' is a movie that was technically flawed, but has a certain charm that has made it develop a following.
This is a great movie, both technically - and when it comes to charm.
It's just a lot of people never saw it.
It must have been horribly marketed when released.
This, as was 'natural born killers', were the first movies written by QT, but directed by someone else.
And they are both classics.
I really wish QT would have let his other movies be directed by someone else, as well.
He isn't half as good of a director as he is a writer.
And the worst part about it, his directing abilities have hardly grew; while somehow his dialogue skills have almost disappeared.
'Hateful 8' and 'Once Upon a Time...' were not up to par, for what we've come to expect.
This is A+ writing. When he was at his hungriest.
All of the great actors, to which this is littered with - are just icing on the cake.

A truly great film that's only real flaw is its underuse of its most interesting characters. Gary Oldman gives the performance of a lifetime, but is only in the movie for one scene. Same with Christopher Walken. It's a great film, but I could have definitely used more of them. That being said, this is an otherwise perfect movie. Great characters, excellent screenplay from Tarantino... It is fantastic.

The music, the cast, the hilariously complicated situations, the acting, this movie shines with it all! It's criminally underrated imo! James Gandolfini also has a terrific scene with great tension and dialogue. RIP. Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper share an incredible scene as well. Any movie where even the bad guys talk about the emotions and gravity behind killing someone has power behind it!

My 2nd best Crime film (after Pulp Fiction) It brought the funny into Crime films, don't like the very ending though, Slater was a star back then.
When I watched this again in 2017 I moved it up my list to number 4, and more importantly above Goodfellas.

One of the better mob movies out there. Dennis Hopper, Christian Slater, Gary Oldman, and Christopher Walken give some of their best performances of their career. Soundtrack doesn't always seem like it goes with some of the scenes, but it was worthy nonetheless. Tony Scott definitely hit it out of the park with this one and it's now one of my favorite movies from him.

This is one of those crazy sort of movies on a high octane level in between destruction and true love that you just absolutely fall in love with. Every character has something to bring to the table in True Romance.
Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette's chemistry is out of this world and you fall in love with them the very minute you meet them.
Stand out performances from Gary Oldman, Bronson Pinchot, and Brad Pitt. Not a film for everyone, but for the Wild at Heart's, who love a great Quentin Tarantino script meshed with fantastic Tony Scott direction, and outstanding performances from top to bottom, you will fall in love with this crazy, special film!

Visionary director Tony Scott brings an early Quentin Tarantino script to life. The cast is beyond amazing (Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman Samuel L Jackson & more) especially the leads that play an amazingly lovable couple, the dialogue is witty and smart (some of Tarantino's best), the violence is bloody and realistic, plus plenty of dark humor. What else could you want in a movie? Side note: apparently Brad Pitt's stoner character was the inspiration for "Pineapple Express".

I don't know how anyone can watch this film without a positive reaction. It is great. Can you go wrong with Tony Scott directing a Quentin Tarantino story? Oh yeah, and then there's the cast. Possibly career performances by both Slater and Arquette. True Romance contains great dialogue from Tarantino, and Tony Scott gives the film the touch of action it needs to awaken. Some of the most violent scenes I have seen. They will blow you away. Of course, it all ends in a Mexican Standoff between the cops, the mob, and a film producer's body guards. A great story, an unbelievable cast, and out of this world action. True Romance will keep you on the edge of your seats.
I would say very few films have it all, and "True Romance" is one of them. There are so many beautifully crafted elements to this riveting motion picture I don't know where to start. Tarantino's merciless violence pleasantly blended with a romanticly witty touch displayed through the stellar performances of Christian Slater(Clarence) and Patricia Arquette(Alabama) was something to behold. And the music scene was absolutely perfect from start to finish. True Romance honestly might be one of Tarantino's masterpieces simply because he didn't direct it. Quentin Tarantino and Tony Scott's combined ingenuity made for quite the ride. This is one of the most rewatchable motion pictures ever.
Penned by Tarantino and this lives up to the hype. All star cast with some of the greatest scenes and cameos ever put on celluloid. The scene with Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper is just genius.
True Romance is possibly my favorite love story of all time. This film uses love as a tool to push a story forward instead of having love being the story itself. We get to see two broken individuals be there for one another and raise themselves up from the gutter. Not only that but we have a unbelievably talented cast in every single role that brings so much extra color to the film. That combined with the rich cinematography of Tony Scott gives us a film that surely will be remembered as a classic in years to come. It can be rather brutal in places, but that shouldn't deter you from enjoying this stellar film. if you want to hear a more in depth review on True Romance check out our video review below.
