Sheer brilliance!
Mare of Easstown stands out among the myriad of small town crime thrillers that have hit the TV past couple of years. It's dark, humourous, relatable and sets up a host of characters with complex personal stories. It's not just about the "crime" and that's what makes it so good. You are invested in a multitude of characters and how they are navigating through their problems while simultaneously dealing with new revelations. Don't get me wrong, the main crime is very much part of the plot but unlike most crime investigation dramas, it's not the sole focus of the show.
In terms of acting, the cast is tremendous. Kate Winslet, Evan Peters and Jean Smart stand out but everyone's done a great job. Highly recommended show, a breath of fresh air in a genre that was getting stale.
