Whoever did the trailer and write up for this one scared a lot of people off-I almost didn't watch-it's really not about a woman making an exercise video or finding herself through exercise.....it's a dark and hard look at bulimia, the role/portrayal/treatment of women in the 80s, and abusive relationships. Rose Byrne and Deidre Friel are particularly excellent in this! Edgy and unexpected, a great watch.
I can say this was a legit representation, it very much reminded me of times when I struggled with mine.... Not sure why people say it "doesn't bring awareness to eating disorders" - how so?? By being a realistic representation it absolutely brings awareness, and just because something makes you uncomfortable doesn't mean it wasn't well done. Oh and she definitely was bulimic (people wondered if she actually was or not due to no toilet flushing, etc).... When her husband comments on her eyes being all bloodshot that's from the pressure of vomiting.
This show has a therapeutic effect on me. Negative self talk, eating disorder and enduring/pleasing disgusting partners are things I can relate to. This show empowers me to step up and face my problems.
Guessing a lot of the negative reviews are based on the premier episode which is very dark and not very funny......but don't be fooled. This is a laugh out loud comedy filled with hilarious characters
Oh, and Rose Byrne is fantastic.

I love Rose Byrne in this. The character is filled with self doubt, insecurity and has an eating disorder. She repeatedly beats herself up internally. Love the soundtrack! I'm here for it. Looking forward to next week's episode.

This series wouldn't work if the main character isn't good. The thing is, Sheila's struggles are close to the heart. The toxic negativity as she is talking in her head is prevalent in the pilot. The self deprecating. The bulimia. Sheila is fictional but the 1-starred reviews that mentioned it being boring is definitely a totally different show. The props, the surfer slangs and the vibes invoked in these 10 episodes are true to the time period in regards to a majority of women. The characters and 80's soundtrack makes it worthwhile to re-watch this. Can't wait to see more Sheila come Season Two. Hope Sheila spills some more tea by then.
In the past decade, there have been a number of TV shows set in the '80s: "Stranger Things", "Dark", "Pose", and even a season of "American Horror Story". Adding to this, we have "Physical", about an unfulfilled housewife who gets into aerobics in Reagan-era San Diego.
The series lets its characters evolve. The protagonist (Rose Byrne) feels like she has to conform to beauty standards while her dorky husband (Rory Scovel) runs for office. And then there's the stuff going on in their acquaintances' lives. The series manages to incorporate the era's popular culture and topics relating to political issues at the time. Quite an impressive one.
As to the issue of why so many series take place in the '80s, I don't know. I guess that every decade is bound to have a production or two that takes place in the days of yore, whether it idealizes or criticizes the era of its setting. Whatever the case, this is one fine series. I recommend it.

If you're looking for a bubbly, light hearted romp, watch a network sitcom. This show's lead character is determined to pull herself out of an unappreciated, mundane life. She's obsessed with her weight (like most women were in the 80's). The harshly critical voice in her head is pretty accurate for this type of person. It's not fun to hear, but self hate plays a key role in bulimia. (Would you choose to intentionally inflict the misery of vomiting on yourself if you DIDN'T hate yourself?) Rose Byrne is outstanding. Her character is laser focused and usually upbeat. But her life kind of stinks and she knows it. She's funny, smart and deeply flawed. That's what makes her so interesting.

I am an early millennial (1982) and I can honestly say that this show speaks from the heart. This show is it. It's real and it's raw, not like the majority of cinema that's been pumped out in this millennia. This show stays true to reality and not what Hollywood wants us to perceive as reality. The character dynamics are so relatable, tackling actual and realistic, historical male-female issues and infallibility that are still faced today. This goes beyond female empowerment and hits upon the real topic of sexism (and questioning the nuclear family) on multiple levels, everywhere from work and the home front to even within female friendships. This is so relatable for multi generations. I honestly can attest that the average woman (and possibly male, though I do not presume to speak as such) can relate to this series and that's what makes it awesome. It's relatable and it's real and frankly, it's what women (and men) of today need to see. We've come so far in such a short amount of time, and it should be celebrated, not forgotten! Keep the episodes coming, because I really want to see where this story takes us.
I'm already ready for season 2. Can't wait to see where Sheila's going. The season finale was fantastic!

Can't understand the negative reviews. Must be a certain sense of humour needed here.its witty, true to life, and something different from the usual run of the mill generic comedy's that keep getting churned out

It's honest portrayal of bulimia is great.
The acting is great.
The look and feel of it is great.
There's not enough episodes in a season.
The lewdness of it with the way the female masturbation is shown, is a real turn off. Wouldn't want to see a man in that position with that much information on screen & don't want to see a woman doing it either.
It's not cool, edgy or artistic, it's simply lewd, in bad taste & completely unnecessary to the script, scene and viewer.
If there's a second season I hope they show more class.
This show is definitely not one for children - at all.

This show has to be one of my favorite things I've watched this year. I'm honestly surprised at the score it has.
I love how relatable this show is. The things Sheila must deal with is just depicted in such a way that you can't help but root for her despite her more unsavory tactics. I'm sorry but imma still root for her every time.
Rose Byrn is amazing. I've only seen her in a few films and I enjoy her performances but this is something next level.
I finished season one and two within a weekend and season three has already started off great! I'm excited to see more of season three and I hope for more.

I lived through the 80s aerobics craze... and I am a big Rose Byrne fan so I had high hopes. However, I could not get through 2 episodes. All the self loathing is too much to hear over and over. Her husband is annoying as hell and seeing her subjugate herself to his needs over and over is not fun. Sure I get it is supposed to be dark humor but it is not smart humor and thus it is intolerable.

This is one of the few shows that I look forward to watching the day it's released. While I don't consider it a comedy, it has some funny moments but overall, it's a drama with a set of complicated characters whose complexities are revealed over the course of the season. The self-talk doesn't bother me at all and I'm hoping there will be another season.
I love Rory and so I decided I would give it a shot. Wanted to stop watching so many times as it was quite boring and didn't make a ton of sense to me but I continued for Rory because he's hilarious. I love his stand up and is was awesome to watch him in a show. He's the best.
