The safe, boring nonsense that needs to be stamped out of Hollywood

'The Fall Guy' currently has a 7.2/10 on IMDb. There are some really terrific films out there that don't have a rating as high as 7.2. This movie gave me some clarity on why a movie like 'Barbie' was so popular. People don't actually like the films - they just like Ryan Gosling. It's the only explanation. And chances are they don't even realise it. It's only those of us who aren't overly fond of Gosling that can see how average these films are.

This is exactly the kind of film I hate the most. Safe, boring and predictable down to the last detail. You know exactly how a film like this is going to turn out from the moment it begins. There is zero chance it is going to take daring and unexpected turn. The studio themselves may as well have made the movie.

I could go on endlessly about everything I hated about this movie, but it's not the type of film that is worth putting the effort into. I would rather watch a film that tried something original and daring, and perhaps failed in its attempt, than watch a film like 'The Fall Guy' every single time. 4/10.

Perfect for Preschoolers!

Everything about this movie is rediculous and banal.. I gave it 4 stars with maybe 4,5 in mind because of the charisma of Rian Gosling 60%, Emily Blunt 25%, for stunts 10% and 5% for 2 or 3 decent comedic-stunt moments.

This is actually a STUNT movie without anything thrilling, exciting, funny or moving. Every line in the film has less then one dimension, like for 4-8 years old.

I am truly and seriously disappointed that these two actors that I adore so, didn't do something more lasting and iconic together, but instead did this shallow flick that nobody will want to watch twice. And they could have done ANYTHING... The worst part is that the film could have been better with just 2 things: if their love story was written better, and on few places they could have made more original plot. Few of us just yelled ideas while whatching and some of them were quite good😊 Yes, I see many good ratings, and they wouldn't be the same if not for these actors😉

Shockingly Boring

I don't know how they did it, but The Fall Guys turned out to be a shockingly boring movie. Ryan Gosling's charisma was not enough to hold this overly long film together. The plot is paper thin, most of the "jokes" aren't even funny and are often just overly long holds on a characters "reaction face." It overstays its welcome by 20 full minutes. It wasn't funny enough, the actions scenes were surprisingly mediocre with lots of green screen and CG effects. ...I was really disappointed. It's 4/10 for me.

If you love the Transformers movies and the worst Fast and Furious films you'd probably be the audience for this.

Empty and Soulless

This should have worked, Gosling and Blunt both have definite screen presence, they have both done light comedy, romance, serious and action yet they just can't make this work. Despite the obligatory 'we all love each other' vacuous Hollywood interviews there is no real chemistry here which makes the delivery fall flat. Now that probably isn't helped by a wafer thin plot and the erratic direction of David Leitch who hasn't made a decent movie yet except maybe (and it's a stretch) Atomic Blonde; we really have descended into the rabbit hole when talentless former stuntmen can have millions of dollars thrown at them by studios to 'direct' a movie when all they are doing is their old job of stunt coordinator with someone adding a few lines of dialogue in-between set pieces to kind of stitch it together. If you want something to wash over you for two hours while you drink beer and eat crisps then be my guest otherwise don't bother.

Below expectations

This movie is lacks direction. It is witless, and the storyline is not clever. If you think you are going to see a cool movie about stunt people you are wrong. I wish I had spent the money on something else. It's not even close to the worst movie I have seen, but I wasn't entertained and I felt a bit duped. The movie focuses more on a relationship that went sour and an attempt to rekindle the relationship - and it's not cute and sweet or memorable. It doesn't do the romance well - felt awkward. I really like Ryan Gosling and felt his talent was wasted in this film. I'm surprised it has the good reviews it has. Movies have really gone downhill in recent years. It's sad! Hope we can make movies great again someday.

Actually walked out

What movie are people seeing. Can't be this atrocious flick. I used to watch the series back in the 80's. It was a standard action show where cars would be destroyed every episode and rarely anyone got hurt or killed. I knew this would be different because Colt is not a Bounty Hunter like he was in the show but the previews made it look action packed and fun. Yeah well hoodwinked again. After the horrendous experience of stubbornly staying to watch the entire Civil War movie we decided to throw in the towel and leave after 45 excruciating minutes. Speaking of boring Gosling and Blunt are stale and boring alone and with each other. The action scenes ( at least the first half ) are equally boring and unexciting. What a huge letdown. Gosling just meanders around muttering to himself. There is one agonizingly long scene where Blunt is letting Ryan know why she wants nothing to do with him; using the bullhorn in front of everybody. Like every scene before and after it just wasn't funny. Maybe the second half was better though I doubt it. We just saw Hooper again the other day ( which is also about stuntmen doing a movie ) and even though it's dated it's so much better. Wait for streaming as we should have.

Cheesy, badly executed, and barely amusing

This movie was so unbelievably bad, I am trying to process how it could have gone so wrong. To start with they picked the wrong director, this guy's had some truly terrible movies over the last seven years and the last decent film he's done was Atomic Blonde. So staying away from this director would have been the smartest thing that the studio possibly could have done. Ryan Gosling is great but he just didn't have much to work with here, the movie was so over the top and so ridiculous, it was basically a Marvel film without being a Marvel film. It was an amusement park ride, but it was unbelievably sloppy and messy and obnoxious.

The chemistry between him and Emily Blunt's character was OK, and was believable, but the film was not well written, the movie was attempting to be funny when it should have been serious, and there was there was nothing about this film that worked for me.

While the dialogue explaining the significance of Leitch's visual choices was probably deeply insightful for the audience who is unaccustomed to film analysis, it was a little cheeky. It feels like revealing the secret to a magic trick during the act. Also "The Fall Guy" opens with a montage of action sequences from other movies, and Leitch dives into his archive, which seems big-headed even for Hollywood. The action scenes are fine but can be monotonous after a while though the running joke that Colt cannot get a cup of coffee to save his life was pleasing. The trippy scene felt too gimmicky with blows accentuated with sparkles. Very cheesy, actually.

I'm just happy that I didn't see it in the theater so that I was able to fast forward through the most some of the most obnoxious parts.

What's with all the good reviews?

I am a fan of both Ryan and Emily Blunt, and could not possibly be more disappointed. It's not their fault though, IT'S THE DIALOGUE!! They just wouldn't stop talking, it was soo distracting; bad joke after bad joke (some landed, but most fell flat). There were like 3 laughs in my cinema. The script writers made the most convoluted mess imaginable. The pacing was terrible, and because of the bad dialogue, there were so many important moments that went unnoticed because they tried to fit in one more joke (ugghh...so this just happened...TYPE OF JOKE). This whole thing was like a long SNL version of a WAWA comercial!

I am just appalled at all the good reviews to be honest. Most "reviewers" here are either bots or NPCs; if you lot are real, then you deserve these mediocre types of movies being released - i want no part in this.

It doesn't work.

It's a comedy with no laughs.

It's a love story with no real relationship It's an action flick that drags It's a mystery that has no questions to ask.

The fall guy claims to be a romantic action comedy love letter to stuntman. It even has Ryan Gosling and the Director reiterating this point before the film.

It's a thin plot with an overlong run time. The second d half is exceptionally dull. Even with amazing stunts, the movie drags . We had 7 people in the theater. Two left at the 40 minute mark. They were bored and made fun of the movie. My wife fell asleep. My niece didn't laugh once. Was bored. In the end, we all agreed it was a waste of time.

Ryan Gosling comes off as a dope who can't be hurt. Emily Blunt has about 4 scenes and the karaoke is pretty bad. The bad guy is Gail.

It's a dumb movie that people seem to like... but it's funny how they usually focus on the "on set chemistry" which only counts for 10% of this jumbled mess. BTW, that's malarkey. Their on screen chemistry is a few scenes with her sitting on a table, counter, or ledge while he pulls in close. The rest of the movie could literally dumped the love story and not changed. That's just how unimportant that is.

The action:

Nobody cares. We've seen stuntman directed films and it usually ends with Keanu Reeves falling down 100 flights of stairs for the fifth time while shooting everyone else in the noggin. It gets old, boring, and ridiculous... just like this movie.

For prepubescents

There have been so many reviews on this one, so I'll keep it brief.

Driver, starring Ryan Gosling, and Emily Blunt's Edge of Tomorrow are favourites of mine. That is why I started watching.. This film contains elements of both environments, but nothing else.

How can these actors not leave after the first shot? They must notice the difference in the quality of the drafting, story, and dialogue.

Okay, this is a comedy, but stupid jokes seen a thousand times, such as a dog biting in the pants, are not entertaining at all. I waited 40 minutes for the plot, but there was none, and when it was disclosed, it was so rudimentary.

When it becomes a torment to watch a comedy all the way through, I have to realise it was not meant for me. And I doubt I would have liked it if I were 50 years younger.

Have you been warned. No Movie for Old Men.

I give it four stars since it finds its audience and is professionally produced.

A Disappointingly Forgettable Summer Season Kick-Off

Inspired by the Lee Major's starring TV show of the same name that ran for 5 seasons from 1981-86, David Leitch's modern take on The Fall Guy comes at a time when Hollywood is crying out for an American summer blockbuster hit that ignites box office booths when most others are floundering and while there's a chance this Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt starring action comedy does make a decent dent at the global box office, Leitch's well-intentioned big budget affair is sadly another recent blockbuster that doesn't hit the mark.

An amalgamation of a bevy of ideas, Fall Guy acts as a crowd-pleasing action ride, a generic romantic comedy centred around Gosling's long-suffering stuntman Colt Seavers and Blunt's up and coming director Jody Moreno, a love letter to the stunt community and an underdeveloped mystery that see's Seavers enlisted to help track down Aaron Taylor-Johnson's missing Hollywood leading man Tom Ryder.

With this in mind, no one can accuse Leitch's film of resting on its laurels but despite appearing to have its heart in the right place, too much of Fall Guy feels forced, underdeveloped and at the same time overstated, making this a a film likely to appease easy going audiences initially but a film that disappears from people's memories before a second thought.

A one time stuntman himself, David Leitch has found success over the past decade with his ability to instil many of his films with the right amount of zany energy, comedic chops and action beats, with his work on successful outings such as Deadpool 2 and the highly underrated at the time Bullet Train perfect examples of the type of film Fall Guy wants to be and with it missing the mark in many of the elements that made those films so much fun, at the very least you'd expect the action heavy segments of Fall Guy too fly but even the key action moments here never take off, with no set pieces likely to be considered again once the next scene rolls around.

Trying to be so many things at any one time, there's a distinct lack of focus that embodies Fall Guy's long in the tooth runtime that runs out of steam early, picks up momentum when Seavers rolls into Sydney after a long term hiatus in the industry and then loses significant amounts of good will and energy when a quite terrible last act takes hold, with this lack of focus constantly bringing any wins the film has back to earth, no more evident than in the films constant back and forwards between events on the set of Seavers and Moreno's new movie, Seavers investigation into Ryder's disappearance and then Gosling and Blunt's forced feeling will they or won't they romance.

With so many things going on and film struggling to deliver on the spectacle front, hopes of Fall Guy being saved on the comedic front are not too be found with minor chuckles the order of the day as many of the films big set-ups and over-delivered back and forwards lacking the smarts or charms that could've made even some of the minor potential moments something worth celebrating with Fall Guy also in particular marking a moment in Gosling's career as it stands where his schtick that his finely attuned over the most recent parts of his career showing genuine wear and tear.

Not playing the exact same pretty dumb he did with The Nice Guys or Barbie or the sleek comedic charmer he did with La La Land or Crazy, Stupid, Love. There's still a sense of over familiarity with Gosling's turn as the potentially genius/potentially misguided Seavers and there's not many moments in Fall Guy where you feel Gosling is really owning proceedings here, marking this role down as a key career moment for the beloved star where he will either continue to bunker down with this type of project or start to recognise it is perhaps time he gave this version of Gosling the A-lister a rest.

A well-intentioned film and entirely inoffensive, there's glimpses of the film Fall Guy just might have been and there's going to be some fans of the film unearthed no doubt but overall this films the exact type of forgettable Hollywood film the industry really didn't need right now.

Final Say -

Failing to excel in the action or comedic stakes and unable to do much with the chemistry between Gosling and Blunt that could've been mined far greater than it was here, The Fall Guy is a disappointingly lacklustre and disjointed outing that has strangely been greeted with a far kinder critical reception than it deserves.

That was brutal!

I didn't like anything about this movie and the only reason I didn't walk out after 45 minutes is because I was on a date. If you come to see cars blowing up and people being launched and no plot this just might be for you. I'm looking for a lot more for $16 per ticket. Don't say I didn't warn you. Total snooze fest. The woman I went with faked like she kinda liked it because she picked it. I'm still trying to figure out how this got such high ratings? I used to use these ratings to decide whether I'm going to go see the movie. Now I'm starting to wonder if people were paid to give such high ratings.

This happened and then that happened and then this happened again

Why was this so bland? No heart. No inspiration.

I don't buy the homage to stuntmen thing. It is just an excuse to have lots of stunts.

I don't buy the romance between Blunt and Gosling at all. In love one minute, hating each other the next. Don't get me wrong, the actors are amongst the most engaging working in Hollywood at the moment, it just never made sense.

The detective part of the story was nonsense. Just an excuse to have lots of silly 'comedic' set pieces.

None of it kept me enthralled.

The plot was a symphony of 'and then' writing as called out by the South Park boys.

In short watch the original TV show. That made sense.

A one time only time pass

I have to give it to the ppl who made the trailer because the trailer was soooo promising about an action pack movie which divulge into the life of Hollywood stuntmen and what u get is mehhhh. The actions were good but some felt way too dragged for no reason. The cheesy romantic plot was sooooooooo unnecessary only because Emily Blunt couldn't make the romance between her and Gosling believable at all. It was like watching two cousins trying to act romantic and felt like she phoned it through the whole movie, so it seemed an unnecessary subplot. Ryan Gosling was like in his Ken era during his lover boy moments. He worked hard there's no doubt. It was fun to see the BTS for how the stunt works are being done. But i must appreciate Aaron Taylor Johnson, the guy did so good as a douchebag that u r bound to dislike him, and that's a win for him for sure. And when u know the mysterious villain by the very first look at them, that's a failure for the villain for sure.

I am glad i saved my money by not going to the theater and watching it online, otherwise i would have cried for refund for sure.

Four stars for 4 versions of the same song

It takes a special kind of movie to use the same song four times across 3 different versions.

Fall Guy doesn't have a script you can follow, or a direction to understand. It's inside jokes fall flat like Ryan Goslings dialogue and even the best stunt performances can't lift the action to a level enjoyed by most.

But what it can do is use Kiss's, I was made for loving you, again and again and again and again.

No budget for a soundtrack? The Aussie backdrop and could only manage an acdc track. Was so comical a choice.

Fall Guy is a movie for a few stunts artists who do a great performance, it's a pity they didn't get a writer, director and editor along for the ride.

Four stars for the four versions of Kiss.

Wasted effort !!

For this movie to work for me, I would have to be in my teens and this would have to be the 80/90's. For 2024, story is bare and cliched, to the point of boredom. It felt like the movie makers made the movie just to pay tribute to stunt men/women of the industry. But the irony was the stunts of the protagonist who is supposed to be a stuntman was done by other stuntmen. Besides the pyrotechnics and behind the scenes car stunts there wasn't anything to hold the audience attention or stir up any emotions. Emily Blunt's character didn't do justice to her and Gosling tried hard to add some mirth to his role but failed. My conclusion wait for it on Netflix.

Gahhh. NOT at all like the original Fall Guy.

So missing the real show right now. This is a poor portrayal of that. Not even close. They should be embarrassed for taking the same name. I'm so sorry, Lee Majors. CG, AI and special effects are ridiculous. Ryan Gosling, why??? 8 stunt people for his character. Watch for the fakeness, iffin y'all wanna. And the overacting. My husband's gonna stick it out, but I'd rather stick a dull, hepatitis infected needle in my eye. The end cannot come too soon. I'm ready to watch Ratatouille or anything else FFS. Gimme the original Family Feud or anything less contrived. I really hope we didn't have to pay for this ridiculousness.

The acting is unbearably bad

Acting: 2 Dialogue: 1 Camera work: 5 Editing: 3 Budget: 8 Story: 3 Theme: 2 Pure entertainment factor: 4 Video quality: 8 Special effects: 7 Pacing: 4 Suspension of disbelief: 2 Non-cringe factor: 3 Lack of flashbacks: 5

This tries to be comedy. Tries. All the comedic scenes that are supposed to make you laugh are cringe inducing and the issue is that that's basically all dialogue scenes. They are overproduced, the dialogue is extremely stiff and fake, and often everyone is just chit-chatting about nothing or screaming their lines. This feels like a movie made with a script that's 50 pages long. The rest is adlib. There are constant scenes where 2 characters are supposed have an awkward personal debate. Yet the cuts are overly fast, the music too loud, and the dialogue is horrible. The whole script is awful mainly because of the dialogue that feels like it's written by someone who has never written a script before. Someone trying to write a comedy for the first time ever without really understanding what makes a scene funny. So it feels like a cheap imitation of a mediocre movie.

But then it's clear from the editing the producers didn't trust the story and acting to deliver so they overproduce each scene and cut it to bits. Everything feels extremely rushed yet the movie is overly long. Even the initial storyline kickstarting the plot is rushed via flashback and slow motion scenes. So many slow motion scenes everywhere! And then a 18 months jump in time where all this crucial plot development happened. They clearly had the runtime to tell a clear story yet just didn't. I can't even explain why. They had the actors, the budget, the runtime. They had everything to pull off a decent story. So the reason for the failure is just lazy people making the movie or no one actually making sure the quality is high. This is clearly produced, not directed.

Also, the story makes no sense. What are the plans? What role does the police play?

Weak script causes great stuntman to fall

I have said this time & again: A good film HAS to grab you within the first 15 min.& it has to keep that pace WITHOUT "dead spots". The Fall Guy started good, I wanted to see more. But unfortunately it got bogged down with a bad story line. Two good actors can not always save a bad script. Maybe, just maybe they did towards the end, but I did not bother to wait & see if this was true. I hate to waste my time. A film should not waste the viewers time. It's bad business. Timing, Script and Direction are keys to the success of any movie. It HAS to keep the viewer engaged to the very end or it will fall short.

An Unmemorable Romance with Unrealistic Action

It's actually a nice film, but it's so forgettable that just 24 hours later, I can't even remember what the film was about. A stuntman falls in love, goes into hiding for a year, and then reunites with his lover. The film features some decent action scenes, but you constantly find yourself wondering if they were really filmed for real. Why? Because, in what should be simple scenes, you can clearly see poor and visible green screen effects. I was even more shocked at the end when I saw in the credits that all the stunts were, in fact, real! Unfortunately, I can't rate the film higher than 4/10.

Oh dear, not good.

I had a look at the IMDb rating before I watched this movie on Netflix. 6.9/10. How could it be getting ratings 8/10? Were we watching the same film?

I was expecting so much more. Hugely disappointing. This film was not good.

I'm not a fan of Ryan Gosling. Even less so after seeing the stinker movie Barbie! One of the worst movies ever.

But I love Emily Blunt. What was she thinking? I can't believe that the script read well enough for her to say yes to this. Even she couldn't save this movie. Who wrote this rubbish?

Sure, a lot of the stunts were amazing but some went on for way too long. The plot was weak & all the stunts in the world can't make up for it.

That said, the gorgeous Australian Kelpie stole the show in his scenes. Y'all were out-acted by a dog! That says it all.
