Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in The Fall Guy (2024)

The Fall Guy

Thin plot strung over some excellent stunt work

The Fall Guy acts best as a glorious ode to the art of stunt work. Perhaps never before have a film been focused so much on the unseen heroes behind many great films - the stunt doubles delivering shockingly realistic portrayals of the action. And in that respect The Fall Guys succeeds- it's action sequences are delivered flawlessly, and are breathtaking to behold. They climax to a crescendo at the ending, where a several vehicles crash, flip and explode, all in sync with action involving a helicopter in the sky with our main character. Praise should also be given to the films two charismatic leads. Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling share palpable chemistry and are simply endearing to behold. They are affable, amiable, and funny. But ultimately my problem with this film is that it is unevenly paced, lacks enough humour, and has too thin a plot to retain an audiences full attention. The films firstly takes too long to get its plot started, resulting in a laborious introduction, a sped through mid section, and a bombastic but slightly rushed ending. The film also does not exert its full potential of comedy. The film does not make use of action comedy(as best exemplified by the Jackie Chan films) or a particularly witty script. Indeed the script is rather dull, sometimes trite, and altogether not very sharp or exciting. Then there is the films plot. I can comment not much other than that it is the recyclable convoluted B-grade plots which are common in movies. It is predictable, ludicrous, and quite inexcusable. So at the end of the day, The Fall Guys is a good comedy that acts as a wonderful tribute to the art of stunt work, bolstered by strong, effervescent performances between its two leads. But for movie watchers who do not care much for the films impressive stunts, The Fall Guys will prove to be a rather empty watch. Serviceable, but unexceptional.

Chaotic and messy

The whole movie is like a lot is going on yet it's all very flat. Some scenes are just too cheesy. The pacing was somewhat weird but i guess it is very likely to happen when you try to blend chunks of romcom, action, and crime scenes altogether into a 2-hour movie.

Was kinda surprised by Aaron Taylor-Johnson though. Have always thought of him as a great actor but never realized he can be good at playing a silly cartoonish and very stereotypical character also. He was hilarious! !

Overall it's not to my personal taste at all but this is an okay movie. If you're looking for a no-brainer fun movie you can go for it but don't expect too much.

Not as great as one expects, but quite entertaining

Well, what can I say?! It's entertaining, but surely not as much as I expected. Ryan and Emily are excellent, what really can't be said about any among the rest of the cast. There is a bit of action, but surely not as much as one expects according to the title and the fact of the movie being based on the old series of the same name. There is also some comical romance, but nothing really too convincing. The last 15 minutes plus the credits showing the "making of" scenes to one side of the screen, are the most enjoyable, especially as there are some (somewhat expected) cameos for movie lovers. 6/10 points.

All over the place and misses the mark

I had some hopes for The Fall Guy but it felt like they decided on one storyline and changed their mind partway through and pursued another plot. This film is hugely disjointed and weakly put together to the point that it became almost a chore to finish it. While I do enjoy going to the movies, I also hope for some sort of plot and direction to string this together. The Fall Guy had none of this. Emily Blunt is under utlised in this film and her character is quite weak. Meanwhile Ryan Gosling also looks like he's trying to figure out what this film is about. I liked the tribute to Lee Majors and the original TV series. This could have been a decent film and there was potential here but it was poorly executed. A weak 6 out of 10.

Fall Guy? More like Fall Flat!

The movie would have been better if Emily Blunt's scenes were completely removed. It would have made the movie flow better and stay on topic - the character arch of the Fall Guy.

The sequences with Emily in the movie distracted from the action, the story, & the main character.

The female protagonist Also caused the pacing to be slowed. Not sure what else to say about this drivel.

And not too sure exactly why Emily's character was so angry at the Fall Guy. He injured his back & was incapacitated from a near death fall. It took him several months of rehabilitation & hard work to get back on his feet. All of that hard work to be chastised his "love".

Welp...

In my opinion, the trailers were better than the movie. I didn't laugh nearly as much as thought I would. I did wince a lot, though, out of sympathy. This looked physically painful to make. Also, it is kind of bonkers that a stuntman performs all of the stunts for the actor who is playing a stuntman.

Filmography was great. It was all very satisfingly colorful. Mr. Gosling made it look real. I like Mrs. Blunt in pretty much everything she does. Whoever wrote the "jokes" in this movie didn't appeal to my sense of humor. I spent most of the movie feeling bad for the people falling, crashing through things, getting hit by fists or cars or whatever.

Surprising twist at the end. Wait until the movie is available to rent, though, unless you can get a movie ticket for $7 or less (which I did). I have no desire whatsoever to watch this film again. You fooled me again, trailers.

Perfectly Meh

I was disappointed at the overall plot but it's still an enjoyable 2 hr watch. There are wonderful moments but they just don't add up as a whole. Gosling and Blunt are fantastic and I'd watch more of them together. I love Gosling's comedic style/humor/timing/subtlety (similar to Nice Guys) and there's plenty of that. His scenes with his Stunt Coordinator (can't remember the actors name) is great and their action sequences were awesome.

Overall, it feels like the movie was built around specific moments hoping to bring the entire story together vs the other way around. Absolutely worth a watch but that's about it.

Great Action but don't overthink the plot!

The film primarily showcases an impressive array of stunt work, which serves as its main attraction. While the underlying narrative is filled with comedic absurdities, I must admit that many of the stunts and jokes are genuinely entertaining. The cast delivers commendable performances, effectively bringing their characters to life. However, the film's lack of realism within the plot significantly detracts from its overall impact. Despite this flaw, it remains an enjoyable watch for those seeking light-hearted entertainment without the need for deep contemplation. I can't say I'll be in a rush to rewatch it, but I have to admit that some parts did bring a smile to my face.

Not quite satisfying

It's a run of the mill action comedy; I was expecting something more interesting.

Gosling's acting is better than Blunt's (usually she outshines her co-stars, it's apparent that she was here for the paycheck).

The karaoke scene is puzzling and could have been cut without altering the pacing (Blunt is a good singer, but this is not the Eurovision Song Contest).

Some characters make some dumb decisions just to keep the plot plodding along; the whole premise is a bit unbelievable. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was buch better in, say, Bullet Train; here he's as two-dimensional as it gets.

I appreciated some nice behind-the-scenes on how movies are made, and a few original ideas - even if these are few and far between.

The action scenes are top notch, at least.

Gosling and Blunt have ZERO chemistry

The Fall Guy tells the story of a stunt man (who apparently can also fight and sort of be a secret agent-type) who is hired to find a missing star actor so the woman he loves can finish directing her debut movie. If he gets the actor back, her career will be saved and he will win her heart. The only problem is, the case takes several unexpected turns and our hero is framed for murder. Now, he has to clear his name, catch the bad guys, and save the day.

Gosling is pretty terrific as the main character, but we never really get to know or understand him. How did he get so good at being a secret agent-type person? And the film has some funny moments, especially early on...but they become few and far between and it's less comedy and more kind of light hearted fun where you don't laugh but you smile. (Sort of).

Our main hero and his love interest have zero spark. It's hard to care if he ever saves the day or gets the girl. Plus, the case he goes on has a twist that changes the plot of the film halfway through and while I saw the plot twist coming - I can't say that it helped the movie.

The action scenes in this film are fun, but they aren't so good that you haven't seen better elsewhere and in the end they don't make up for all of the missing elements in the parts of the film. Overall, The Fall Guy is a movie that has some action that is decent, a hero who is likable but hard to relate to, a love story that feels empty, and a mystery which never really amounts to much.

I see why it flopped.

The Fall Guy

The Fall Guy was a fun cheesy 1980s television show starring Lee Majors. A stuntman making ends meet as a bounty hunter.

So the trailers made no link to the television show at all. Ryan Gosling was expecting another gigantic hit after the success of Barbie. It soon became clear why this movie failed to set the box office alight. A weak screenplay.

Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is the stuntman who got badly injured while doubling for big screen star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson.) He always claims to do his own stunts.

Colt got out of the movie industry. Some time later he gets a call from producer Gail (Hannah Waddingham) to go out to Australia as Ryder has gone missing.

It would allow Colt to reunite with Jody (Emily Blunt), a camera operator he had the hots for. She is directing the movie in Australia and if Ryde cannot be found, the studio will pull the plug.

Maybe Universal Studio should had pulled the plugged for this until they had a better story. It takes a while to get going. It is a hackneyed plot.

It is left for the stunts to do the heavy lifting. They are good but not amazing. The plot is the drag.

At least there is a reference to the television show at the end. Maybe this should had been about stuntman turned bounty hunter. Instead you have to take the title of the film literally.

There were a few nice touches. When Colt saves a person with force, there was the Six Million Dollar Man sound effects used. During a boat chase, there is the Miami Vice theme.

Average action movie, not a tribute to stuntmen

Average action movie, not much funny even.

As for being a tribute to stuntmen, I have no idea who was Ryan's stuntman. The stunts didn't look too impressive, mostly because lots of action looked like bad CGI.

This movie doesn't know what it wants to be: a comedy, action movie, anything more serious?

During last action scenes I was just waiting for it to be over. They fight and fight but who cares? We all know how it will end. And it ends exactly how you would expect. Completely predictable. Therefore: boring.

Plot is as usual as you can imagine. We've seen such action too many times, it's the same stuff all and over again - fight, chase, joke, bad guys loose, good guys win. Meh.

There's no way ppl think this is a 9/10

From the get go the premise doesn't make sense This dude had a chick , gets hurt And stops the relationship because....??? Oh at the end they explain, but it is so silly the reasoning Which is kind of important because it is a big piece of them getting back together Then his ex just takes him back after years of Mia And they go back to making movies Btw Ryan is not that good looking I'm all about game recognize game But he's a 6 on his wedding day

Ryan blows a flame and he has flammable liquid in his mouth so that it turns into a flame thrower???? Oooook

The dialogue was not interesting

This is essentially a stuntman love story, with bad fight scenes, cheesy shooting scenes and a love story.

Why leave us with this half cooked film?

Is this really the legacy of Ryan Gosling after drive and Emily Blunt after a Quiet place? What is this movie offering to go and see at a theather other than seeing ar Netflix or etc. We go to movies to be impressed, to feel part of the movie. I really like these very talented people but i felt like being taken as an idiot after the movie. I guess it just a not for my age or movie taste anymore. I should have known, all red flags were there. The line between cinema oriented movies and subscription based movies are becoming thinner I feel. There are less and less high quality movies and this movie is a reminder to me.

Strong start, bemusing ending.

How do I put this into words? The Fall Guy begins very strong with an opening one-take style shot, establishing the organic, calm and cool collectiveness that Ryan Gosling brings to our screens, in addition to the very nature of being a Hollywood stuntman to the biggest and most bankable actor within its fictitious world. Emily Blunt, is nicely introduced and the film is quick to confirm its genre identity, well I think it does? Ryan and Emily have fantastic chemistry together, with some genuinely hilarious scenes that had me strapped in for an enjoyable action-romantic-comedic watch. However, the film begins to fall flat and a little directionless past the 45 min mark. The plot takes an interesting but slightly surreal turn, leaving me a little out of place and giving me the vibes of 2008's Tropic Thunder. In short, the film starts very strong but by the end I was left disappointed and unfulfilled. On the plus side, the film is very well directed, when it's funny, it's funny, and the script is filled with movie references that will have you quizzing aloud throughout its two-hour runtime. Overall, I feel that The Fall Guy is in the higher echelon of okay, and it's a double shame that it bombed ludicrously at the box office, which is ironic as the fictional motion picture Ryan and Emily are working on, would be doomed to meet the same fate in my opinion.

The Fall Guy reboot. meets What's Up Doc for for 12 year Olds?

Hmmm. A mixed bag of nuts and washers that are all the wrong size, If this truly was a tribute to Stuntmen , as the publicity launch wanted you to believe, then there would be an expose on all the kit they have to use to reduce injury or fatalities.

I suppose the writer's strike gave them time enough to post process the film, and re-edit, but it's still an unbelievable action film.

Did the superstars really need the work/money to appear in this unbalanced mess.

These liittle vignettes shown on the media launch on network television, and the tube trailers sucker you into thinking this may be worth viewing at a cinema franchise with all the Imax rumbly/tumbly seats and deafening sound.

Not for me, watched on a streamer, with pauses for pee breaks, and domestic stuff, and my cup of Murky Tea.. The one saving grace was Emily Blunt's kareoke of Phil Collin's classic, but the rest was little pokes at the last decades of fast car movies, ,hollywood star addiction expose's, cliched drug mob hoods, rival studio sabotage, and as at the beginning of this review, a mixed bag of nuts.

The two starcrossed lovers, indulging in impro?" are you.. do you, I'm sorry" became rather tedious, somewhat over cooked and inedible.

A footnote:- When watching Dune Part Two at Cineworld IMAX, we were early on a family ticket, watching the previews, this was one of three or four, last One was Furiosa coming next month end of May The Cinema was packed, and the row behind murmured.. yeah we'll catch that one, the others ... meh... Should have got George Miller in on the job, if you insisted on doing a Mad Max spoof movie, still I imagine the cast of extras, including the real Stuntmen were glad of the work to pay the bills.

What Walt's Watching

It's high noon on the edge of the universe in "The Fall Guy" a movie that's been done before a lifetime ago as a TV series in 1981, before my son was born.

So, what is with Hollywood's obsession with remaking old TV series?

Wasn't 112 episodes from the 80's enough for most of us?

A lack of creativity would be the answer.

Still it was shot in Sydney.

Meaning at the very least it employed a lot of Australian cast and crew which is great for our local film industry.

Play the drinking game "Spot the Aussies and Great Australian Landmarks" and you'll be inebriated before you leave the cinema.

The chemistry between the two stars is palpable and a chance for the biggest stars form "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" to unite on the big screen.

Ryan Gosling is the titular stuntman as "Colton Seavers" in this big budget adaptation.

Although this is not the best project to choose after his role as "Ken" in 2023's smash hit.

It's not the first time Gosling has played a stunt performer, remember "Drive" from 2011?

Meanwhile Emily Blunt plays "Jody" the director of the movie within the movie and does her best in this lightweight action, comedy, romance with fast talking repartee between the two.

Watch out for: Aaron Taylor-Johnson ("Bullet Train") as "Tom Ryder" the star of this fictional movie.

And also "Ted Lasso" favourite Hannah Waddingham as the Producer of said film.

Plus the TV show's famous vehicle, the GMC K-2500 Wideside.

Director David Leitch started his career as a stuntman in movies like "Blade".

No one is calling this Oscar bait even though it stars 3 Oscar nominees, but it is what it is a fun, not always funny movie, that is an escape from your everyday so you can forget about your worries, shocking news headlines, the cost of living etc for just over 2 hours. (at least 30 minutes too long)

Blink and you'll miss it: Six million dollar man SFX during a slow motion fight scene (due to Lee Majors ("The Six Million Dollar Man ") playing the OG "Colton Seavers".

There is plenty of foreshadowing of later events in "The Fall Guy".

The ripper soundtrack opens with Kiss and AC/DC and just keeps pumping out the classic metal bangers.

Please avoid the terrible playlist someone has made on Spotify calling itself "The Fall Guy" (Soundtrack) because it's not even remotely close to the true soundtrack.

Listen out for: the original TV series theme song in the closing credits sung by Lee Majors who has a cameo in this motion picture version.

Even Heather Thomas, the original "Jody", makes an appearance.

Stay for the end credits where you get a sneak peek at the movie within a movie they've been making, "Metal Storm" and meet the real stuntmen and women behind "The Fall Guy".

This flick celebrates the art of stunt performing at every opportunity and could be a fun date night where you'll find yourself reciting some of the lines to your partner on Valentine's Day.

Who knows maybe this movie could convince the Academy to add a "Stunt" category next year?

average quality movie

The scenes of the movie are beautiful, but the scenario is very classic. We are bored now. I saw something, I witnessed something, they came after me. We watched such movies many times. My score is 6.5.... Hollywood needs to come to its senses and find good scripts. Science visual effects, remaking old movies is a sign of burnout. I saw the killer, everyone came after me. What is this Friends? Meanwhile, there is a woman I love and I'm trying to get back together with her. It was just a movie showing these stunts. Please find better scenarios. Meanwhile, the woman doesn't seem to love enough. Very dull. Very cold.

Stunts, Studs and more in the weak plot action film

Movie Review: The Fall Guy

Stunt person/coordinator and director David Leitch, along with writers Glen A. Larson and Drew Pearce have had their hands equally in many an action packed stunt film and TV series. So, the apples didn't "fall" far from the tree here. That's both good and bad here!

Let's start off by saying "Just because Tom Cruise found some egotistical need to intro his last film before the actual movie, doesn't mean everyone should follow suit! Second, thank you Ryan Gosling for looking so good and acting so silly and Emily Blunt for being the perfect love sick and heart broken co-star. Without your on-screen chemistry, this film could have easily been an over the top stunt emphasized dud of a film like Jack Gyllenhaal's recent "RoadHouse". I'm not even going to touch on Hannah Waddingham ("Ted Lasso") over acting and Aaron Taylor-Johnson terrific physique.

The plot here, stuntman gets hurts and runs from his love of work and female attraction, is thin -very thing. Most folks with broken backs probably never be the same. But this a movie, so let that pass. Yes, the stunts are great and they keep coming and coming and coming. Somewhere along the movie watching experience, I "fell" asleep and work up a bit later to more of the same. A BIG Kudos to all the stunt folks - men and women. Stick around (or wake up in time) for the final scenes, for a "six million dollar" look at a few celebrity cameos and behind the scenes shots.

Disappointing and by the numbers flick

Greetings from Lithuania.

"The Fall Guy" (2024) is an action comedy about a Hollywood stunt that gets into a trouble when trying to do good thing as well as get the girl of its dreams. If the plot sounds familiar and formulaic then you have already seen "The Fall Guy". This was a good looking movie, with some excellent stunt work (no pun intended) but screenplay, story and characters were so paper thin that i got bored after first 25 min. At its running time 2 hours this movie overstayed its welcome and was a drag to watch. Its good that it celebrated stunt people in movies - an overlooked ones who make every movie work. But unfortunately it does not make it better.

Overall, "The Fall Guy" was a very disappointing movie considering its star power of two very likable leads and excellent stunt work. Besides that there is nothing else in this movie really to watch.

Oh, so dumb.... but quite good.

If you're capable of shutting your brain off (or drunk) this is actually fairly fun (I was drunk).

Its not a work of art, packed with all sorts of stupid, but its fun.

And now, a bunch of words just to fill the moronic typing requirement on this garbage site.

The lighting was fine.

Effects, kinda good.

The audio also was... mostly fine.

The acting.... Not a single person stood out as being bad.

The soundtrack did have a little of the "music too loud, can't hear the speech"... but far less than almost any other movie in the last decade.... and I think thats my hearing, I doubt most people would notice.

Am I done yet?.... Shesh.

Also, I'm an engineer.... don't get me started.

Ryan Gosling is the Fairly Entertaining Guy

The fall guy is pure fun in every sense of the word. The plot, character development, relationships, twists in the narrative are all fairly standard here. Which is unfortunate. What this film does have is a lot of fun entertaining sequences that will have you well satisfied when the film rolls credits. Ryan Gosling is excellent yet again, perfectly playing the laid back effortlessly cool west coaster stunt man. The stunt work is excellent and the film is able to deliver fairly inventive action sequences. Fall Guy knows what type of film it is. This does mean the film is lacking in some places. But its still hard not to have a decent time with this film.
