The show is a comedy like the 1000 Little Things is a comedy. You'll laugh, but the show is really a drama and trying to make a statement a la Good Times.
So little comedy it wouldn't even be called a "dramedy".
I do like the lesson of how our parents affect our lives and the decisions we make, so it's worth watching for the psychology, but just don't expect laughs like "The Jeffersons" or The Cosby Show.
The relationships are interesting in that the son wants to interact with the former inmate grandfather, and how mom wants to protect him from hearing about that life, and protect him from moving towards that life.
And I learned why women like bad boys. Now that I know what the show is and isn't, I'm looking forward to season 2.

My wife and I sat to watch the first episode of this series and I was quite enjoying it. I enjoyed the dynamic between father and daughter even though I question whether one would be quite so accepting of a career criminal father. (Unless you were crimonally minded yourself). I accept that profanity is part of the linguistic scene even though I think that in every day use it shows a lack of linguistic skills and an ignorance of the breadth and depth of the words available to us. I think art should aim to broaden vocabulary and culture rather than diminish it. I seldom see how the use of profanity actually anhances a movie or show, but I accept it. However I do not understand how giving lines of profanity to a child actor does anything positive to the experience of the viewer or the child. So when a child came onto the screen with lines of profanity my wife and I shared a look and turned the show off. Sorry but it's not for me! You need to be more creative than that! If the child is supposed to be bright, intelligent and sassy, then let the use of language show you that!

I really tried with this. With big names i.e Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo, I had to give it a chance. But it failed to keep me engaged. The kid talk-backs in most the scenes dressed exactly like Kerry are so irritating!. After a few episodes I just gave up. Could not hold my attention. Kerry's acting seems forced for some reason... Of course comparing this performance with Scandal, this falls way short. Delroy is brilliant and a really underrated actor. You feel his every emotion and end up rooting for him to turn over a new leaf and leave his wayward past. He saves the show imo. I tried.
