So far, I'm a few episodes in and I'm falling in love hard with Unprisoned.
There's quite a bit of one liners and a bit of comedic situational set up, however ther is a strong drama through line, especially if you've experienced a distanced/estranged relationship with a parent. The comedy is there to lighten it, which is paced well and fitting in a cultural aspect.
Kerri Washington & Delroy Lindo do a fantastic job at making this father-daughter dynamic feel believable and there is a suspense on how it will resolve for all characters. I know these characters, these personalities are people I've known in my life, so the writing is on point. A special shout out to Jordyn McIntosh as Little Paige, the inner child whose monologues are an insight to Paige's issues in her dynamic with her father, delivered with such sass and comedic timing...I can't wait to see more of her!
Based off of the life of Terry McMillan. I do see work and vulnerability to put this out there. The realness of struggles piking on all at once, microagressions, the love and humor to get you through. This is no laugh track Chuck Lorre, and I for one am glad for the reprieve. It feels like a modern mix of The Cosby Show and Everybody Hates Chris: smart, silly, heartfelt, and most of all real.
9* because I'm in the middle of the season.

It was really good. I thought it was cleverly written. The directing kept me engaged. The acting of course was phenomenal and I so enjoyed the style of the entire series... from the clothes to the entire cast, I watched some of the first half of the entire series the first night, but had to go to bed because sleeping is important and working is too. But as soon as I got off work, I was back at it again.
It was eye opening seeing the point of view of those characters in a fun and loving perspective.
The only thing is I wish that they left out the nudity in the one scene. And I don't think I can get use to kids using some profanity.

I came to season one of Unprisoned for Kerry Washington, who I adore as a person, phenomenally talented actress, and soul sister. I love her choices. I find her brave and smart and so engaging to watch. So that's why I started to watch the show. First season I wasn't quite sure, I was entertained, but the world seemed serious but comedic in a way I wasn't used to. Then I watched season two and I was completely drawn in. I really started to understand Paige's family and her choices (I mean, Mel!) I really loved how they expanded her world as well as her relationship with her sister. I also got to understand more about her father and his hurt and hope. I truly liked Finn this season, although his name??? He is played by a fine young actor and I look forward to his journey. So yeah, it makes me feel real emotions and overall it's pretty beautiful to watch.
