Uninteresting film

Watched this on day 1 release. Everyone who watched before me said this is a blockbuster. I went in with high hopes. Literally couldn't sit through the film. Except for SJ Surya and few good comedy, what does this film offer?

Vishal is poorly cast, he is no match to SJ surya. The story itself is very boring and said in an uninteresting way. The films songs and bgm are even bad. Very loud and jarring. The old songs used in the film are good.

And what's with the self references, like SJ surya mentions Vaali and Vishal with Anaconda. It's really irritating after some point. Poorly written screenplay that follows 0 logic. Even the timetravel concept is not properly shown.

Predominantly dumb, occasionally hilarious

'Mark Antony' with Vishal and S. J. Suryah might not be a good movie, but it's not the worst either. I do appreciate that they had tried something new and unique and while I get that it's supposed to be a dumb movie where the plot doesn't really have to make much sense, I kinda hope that it did because it's not like this movie is without stock. Its greatest asset is actor S. J. Suryah whose comedic timings and mannerisms are almost perfect for a concept as such and whose screen presence almost cancels out its underwhelming screenplay... "almost".

Do I even have to go into loopholes and plot inconsistencies? Or the fact that Vishal looked bloated and misplaced throughout? No, I think this is just about all I feel like elaborating :p.

1. Annoyingly LOUD AF 2. SJ Suryah was epic!

I think the director thought, "I'll take a complex concept and have fun with it" because, why not. Looks like a lot of people enjoyed this film. I'm in the minority, I suppose.

SJ Suryah was fantastic in the film, but that is still the 2nd thing that comes to mind when I think of this film, the first one being - this film that I found to be VERY LOUD. Balaiyya movies are not this loud.

Took me 4 tries to complete this film. Why Vishal was made to play the roles is this way - not sure. Random songs/dances and creative choices BUT, that's just me. Clearly everybody else was blown away seems to have been blown away. Redin Kingsley - I remember watching him the first time in...Doctor (?), he was okay back then. He was over the top LOUD in this one. Why?! Dude plays the SAME role in all the film. Why do directors do this? The volume of the film was taken up a notch every time this guy opened his mouth and had me like 'Calm down, man!!'

If I could go back in time, I'd skip this film but feel free to watch this if you've haven't yet, you might be in the majority lol. Could have been a very interesting movie, just ended up being.....a LOUD movie. I think I'd have enjoyed it more if the volume had been dialed down.

SJ Suryah, Silk and Vishal's Anaconda, the three saviors of this film.

A scientist named Chiranjeevi (Selvaraghavan) invents a time travel telephone in 1975, where one can make a call to any random date in the past with specific set of rules. The events that happen on 31st Dec 1975, decides the future of Mark Antony (Vishal) and Madhan Pandian (SJ Suryah) i.e. 1995. As Mark gets his hands on the special phone, he dials it back to 1975 to stop his father Antony (Vishal) from doing the mistakes on the decisive night. Does Mark succeed in changing the past for good? Are the repercussions of changing the past too much for Mark and Madhan to handle, forms rest of the story.

Adhik Ravichandran has come up with his silliest/goofiest film sans his trademark cringe sexist dialogues. Ofcourse the homophobic lines are there but one step at a time. The film is extremely loud even without SJ Suryah at his loud best but here there exists two SJ Suryahs at their loud best. The first half is extremely silly and loud, asking for too much patience to buy into the narrative and those damned wigs. It is only during the pre-interval scene where the film gets interesting thanks to SJ Suryah.

It is the second half where it goes bonkers with the team playing the time travel game to the gallery. SJ Suryah's loud performance fits perfectly here along with his comic timing. The screenplay in the second half is filled with back to back hilarious scene including the highlight of the movie... Silk ah?! Vishal and his Anaconda get to own the climax. It is the second half that makes up for the silly, unfunny first half. G. V. Prakash Kumar's songs were not good but one gets used to the loud BGM in the second half, which felt apt.

This is a polarizing film. 15mins into the first half, the loudness of the film induced severe headache. Barring the interval scene, I didn't like anything in the first half. Then came the second half, where I found myself non-stop laughing out loud at several scenes. Adhik and team's only goal was to entertain by any means and I guess it partially worked for me. Even Sunil gets his own action scene to shine on screen in a film where Vishal and SJ Suryah dominate the screentime.

Timepass comedy-action drama

Mark Antony is a rollicking comedy that hits the mark on entertainment. The humor revolves around a unique telephone, adding a refreshing twist. While the plot might not break new ground, the standout performances by SJ Suryah and Vishal steal the show. Vishal excels in his dual roles as a gangster and a mechanic, showcasing his versatility. SJ Suryah's comedic timing and charisma are on point, making you laugh throughout. The chemistry between the two leads is a highlight. Kudos to the casting team for this winning duo.

Mark Antony is a dense film with a demanding narrative that requires your full attention. The plot occasionally rushes through important details, impacting its overall effectiveness. The dialogue quality leaves much to be desired, and some dramatic moments feel clichéd. While the film starts strong, the first half can drag at times. Unfortunately, the songs act as disruptive speed bumps, hampering the flow. The climax lacks the expected impact, and Sunil's character could have been more fleshed out.

G. V. Prakash's songs in Mark Antony may not stand out, but the background score complements the film's tone effectively. The production design beautifully captures the bygone era, and Abhinandan Ramanujam's cinematography harmonizes with it. The editing is passable, and the production values are solid. Director Adhik Ravichandran offers a decent attempt, creating a unique sci-fi experience with some fun moments. However, more attention to the songs could have improved the overall experience.

Mark Antony delivers a watchable gangster action drama, thanks to strong performances by Vishal and SJ Suryah. The sci-fi twist adds entertainment value with fun moments throughout. It demands your full attention for the best experience but slows down in the first half. Unfortunately, the songs disappoint, and the climax falls short. If you can look past these flaws, it's a decent time-pass flick.
