After finishing the series I have to admit I was left a bit underwhelmed and here's why.

Unfocused attempt

Not only is the story implausible, but the choices made by the defense and the way the case unfolds for them, asking questions far too late and being unable to make certain connections makes the "reality" of the situation nearly unwatchable. The kid, Nasir, the defendant... He doesn't even explain what he can remember about the situation to anybody and there is no explanation as to why he doesn't simply let them know he didn't do it, or that he saw two guys outside her house or anything... I wish I could go into detail about how off the mark this show has been, although it is made very well in terms of the look and the acting, so I went with it.

Basically, the sub par writing focuses on the wrong aspects of the story and the blatant political subplot to the narrative does not ring true at all. The story is not mishandled from the start, but quickly goes off the rails just enough to make you throw up your arms and wonder what the hell the writers are thinking.

Below average for HBO, certainly

American copies always fall short

I guess the main problem with Americans copying a foreign movie or mini TV series lies in the commercialization of the copy. Basically this series is a copy of the BBC mini-series "Criminal Justice", down to Stone a solicitor on the BBC a lawyer on HBO, and Box the detective in charge of the investigation, but somehow the BBC had 5 episodes to the unnecessarily stretched 8 episodes of "The night of". After all HBO needs to sell more commercials. A ton of unnecessary scenes made this tiresome. The acting is quite good, and the plot is quite mundane, but we like to see justice done even if in real life this is not the case. All in all an average remake of an excellent British series.

shades of gray

Is it good or bad, white or black? Or are people in shades of gray? The Night Of, shows that to us there is no pure kind or pure evil. The development of the TV Series shows that no one, including Naz, is pure, good or bad. In fact, each character is shown to travel in shades of gray.

How did this get an 8.4???

I just finished Black Sails last night- which I thought was fantastic btw and only had an 8.2- and was looking for something to watch and came across this. I LOVED Black Sails, and this had an even better rating, and the reviews seemed mostly fantastic. However, afer a couple of episodes I was like WHY does this have an 8.4??? Its like a slow, really drawn out law & order episode with TONS of filler content to stretch it out over 8 episodes. I normally am in agreement with IMDB ratings, and I actually like slow burns etc, but here unless you're just a crime/courtroom show junkie I don't see why this would be above a 6, 6.5 maybe. Also beware there's a big snake that is shown unexpectedly.

It must be 3 episodes not 8

Till the end , i was still looking for an answer : why they choose to make it 8 episodes ?! There were no story after episode 1 ! What about writing some dialoge and scene for parents ?! Bad decision made by screen writer made this mini series a whole wasted...

this is a worn story

HBO has been struggling with new content as of late. You take away GOT and there isn't a single show on it worth the watch. This is another prime example.

First lets start out with the same old played PC Hollywood formula. There is a white girl. She obviously has to have sex with a minority. There are a couple black dudes who seem like "trouble". They get high. He wakes up and there is a murder....OH the mystery.....

This frankly was awful. I expect so much better from an HBO series. The most interesting character in this are the beat cops who have a couple good lines. But mostly all the characters old and worn.

This 1st episode was long.....too long. 1 hour and 18 minutes for what could have been done in 50 minutes. The extra 28 minutes in length really made the show boring. I was playing with my dog for the last 30 minutes as it just started to really lose interest.

The story was really badly written. This idea that the cops rush an arrest. Don't catch a the bad driver with blood on his hands. Don't pat him down while he's holding a knife....etc... I just had no realistic feel to it. The conversations were not very interesting, and the most important thing of every movie is it lacked drive. Every character is suppose to have an ark, think of GOT and how many characters have ark. That is what makes shows interesting. All characters having angles. But there are tons of characters who have no ark. Causing the show to have no constant drive. This cause the show to end up boring and lacking any real action. They also really limited any sort of suspense in the show.

This show is a 5/10. I know some are trying to give it higher. They are either working on the show or really have no idea what a good show is. The story here is Hollywood drivel with the same old Hollywood character script.

If you are going to make a murder show Please be more original, we have seen this story 1,000x already

Far from being original

It takes 41mn to Special Victims Unit to tell the exact same story. Then 8 episodes sounds like the story has been stretch a little bit too much…

The story is far from being original, movies such 'Just case', 'The life of David Gale', 'the green mile' etc etc , explore the territory of the reasonable doubt…

So why the buzz ???? I am still wondering, the show is slow, full of "déjà vue"….

Riz has no charisma and his character Naz.. is like a dead leaf in autumn wind… So I wonder during 8 episode if he was the luckiest man on earth or the opposite…

I won't talk about the pathetic crush of Chandra

The show ends, everyone are back to their life, some have changed others not…same as us I guess….

Boil down this Wagner opera to 150 minutes.

Swedish lawyer and hard-boiled crime writer mentioned "The Night Of" as something extraordinary. So I watched the mini series over a couple of weeks. Immediately, I felt that the writers had not decide what their perspective should be. If you mix conventional storytelling, with tricking the viewer and changing perspective to cover up some defects in the tale, it will be messy. Much like John Stone's two feet. This great amount of hours it takes to give us this relatively simplistic story is so diluted with feet, faces and walls, that the writers themselves get lost. The director allows a lot of ham-acting for what he thinks brings authenticity. Jeannie Berlin knows better. Riz Ahmed too. And strangely the non-actor Hon Jen Two. Boil down this Wagner opera to 150 minutes.

Not that good not that bad

At first it starts good but later it gets boring.

It could be 6 episodes at max, the story is good but later on there passing time that is not relative i thought it will be better i actually rated it 8 at the 6th episode but i change it to 5 after finishing the series.

The acting is great but a lot of noise to the story.

One season is not enough !!

The bifurcation of inner stories, the psychological dimensions of the characters, and the viewer's desire to develop the story through the elements that were broadcast within the scenes, all of which say that one season is not enough, and I do not know what is the reason for the producers to stop producing the series!

The performance was amazing for the main character, Nas, and also for attorney John Stone. The rest of the characters - especially Naz's father - had absolutely no sense of representation, including the attorney general.

Overall, the plot is good, the acting is good, 6 out of 10 is worth.

N/A

I put this on and at first i thought was a bit of a slow start so i waa almost gonna turn of when it suddenly picked up and im so glad i did. Its engrossing, intriguing, gritty, clever, dark, funny and sad. But most of all its a terrifying look at the tired american justice system and how a kid whos in the wrong place at the wrong time is putthrough the mill of litigators, lawyers and pre trial courts. Brilliant cast great script and if youloveshows like Mareof Eastown, breaking bad, etc then watch this. The cat is even a great star ha ha. Not a whodunit series, it was okay can't complain too much.
